Now most probably, the scribe that was copying the manuscript which the NRSV is based on , noticed there were 2 Jesus' in Matthew The scribe must had thought: "2 Jesus's?
How can that be? There was only 1 person named Jesus. Origen deliberately rejected the reading in the manuscript he was working with, and left out "Iesous" which is the Greek for: Jesus deliberately, for reverential considerations, certainly a strongly motivated omission. The first option that: scribe could have added "Jesus" in front of Barabbas" is irrational and unlikely, because we don't have earlier manuscripts as compared to the manuscripts which the NRSV goes by , which show that the word "Jesus" didn't exist before the word "Barabbas.
In reality, Barabbas is not a name. It is a patronymic which means: "a family name derived from name of your father or a paternal ancestor," which means this word "Barabbas" means.
So this change already, indicates to the reader wrong information that "Barabbas" is not a name, because "Jesus" is taken out in least reliable and later manuscripts. The biggest and most obvious reasons to why this specific change is significant, is because: if one reads the RSV or other versions which don't have "Jesus Barabbas" , one would clearly think that there is only 1 person named "Jesus. So, earliest manuscripts says something which later manuscripts don't.
Also, in the Syriac traditions and early texts, Jesus is known to have had a twin. This is consistent with a belief among early Christians that Jesus had a twin brother. Moreover, notice in the Gospel's, that Barabbas is described as being a "notorious prisoner," and committed murder. The Jews during early Christianity, threw lies against Jesus and claimed that he was a murderer, terrorist and a person who deals with magic instead of miracles.
They slandered him, unfairly. Feel free to leave one :. You will be redirected in 3 seconds. You are leaving x to a website that is not affiliated with us in any way. We cannot guarantee for security of a linked website.
