And car theater systems now are being offered as an option on another American icon, the minivan. Recently, the FCC authorized Boeing to move forward with plans to offer two-way data services for commercial air carriers. And WiFi wireless data networks are popping up everywhere, in schools, businesses, homes, airports and even Starbucks.

Another important and highly profitable component of today's mobile communications infrastructure is a terrestrial broadcasting service — radio. It is ubiquitous, but most important, it is wireless. Sony defined the term walkabout portability with its Walkman personal audio entertainment systems.

But receiving picture through the air has always been problematic, plagued by ghosts and other goblins. As was the case with radio, consumers accepted TV for what it was, until something better came along.

Cable TV was totally reliant upon broadcast content until a new wireless transmission infrastructure changed the rules again. Satellite communications has transformed the communications and distribution landscape — many broadcasters still affectionately call them the Death Stars. While American consumers have grown accustomed to communications without wires, they have largely given up on the idea of un-tethered television receivers. Cable and DBS provide better picture quality, but of far greater importance, they provide greater programming choices than terrestrial broadcasting.

Another pointless anecdote: According to the FCC's eighth annual report on competition in the market for the delivery of video programming, the number of subscribers to both cable and non-cable multichannel video program distributors MVPDs increased to The FCC report did not mention that more than 30 million of these homes now subscribe to a digital television service, while only a few hundred thousand are able to receive ATSC digital broadcasts.

Broadcast lobbyists will quickly point out that nearly half of U. In reality, no one is quite sure how many sets are connected to cable or DBS versus an antenna. Whatever the current reality, the trend is clearly NOT toward the kind of ubiquity enjoyed by radio as a wireless service. The well-documented problems with reception of 8VSB transmissions bring into question whether DTV will be able to support portable reception, much less mobile reception.

The ATSC is currently evaluating modifications to the standard with an eye toward support for walkabout portability, but receiver cost and complexity suggest that it will be many years before the DTV Watchman will become a reality.

Meanwhile, none of the spectrum assigned to television broadcasting in has been vacated for land mobile, cellular, PCS or wireless data services. The two finally part ways at a Chicago 'L'station. On the train, Neal remembers cryptic comments Del made about his wife during the journey and realizes that Del may be alone for the holiday.

Struck by compassion, he quickly returns to the station, sees Del sitting alone and asks why he has not gone home. Del reveals that he does not have a home and that his wife died eight years earlier. Neal returns home to his family and introduces them to Del, whom he has invited to Thanksgiving dinner. The film marked a widely noticed change in the repertoire of John Hughes.

Ebert wrote that the film 'is perfectly cast and soundly constructed, and all else flows naturally. Steve Martin and John Candy don't play characters; they embody themselves. That's why the comedy, which begins securely planted in the twin genres of the road movie and the buddy picture, is able to reveal so much heart and truth. Casey Burchby of DVD Talk said, 'John Hughes, like a lot of other filmmakers who specialized in comedy during the s, knew how to explore a varied range of tones in crafting a full-bodied movie that went well beyond the one-note comedies that are par for the course.

While some reviewers were critical of the sentimentality and silliness seen in the movie, which affected the ability to convey emotional range, [4] most applauded the humor itself. The frenetic musical score by Ira Newborn makes extensive use of the folk song 'Red River Valley', including a rock and roll version of the song 'Red River Rock', performed by British group Silicon Teens.

Among other tracks is a cover version of 'Back in Baby's Arms'. The song, popularized by Patsy Cline, is performed by Emmylou Harris. As well as bad luck, Neal is blessed with the presence of Del Griffith, shower curtain ring salesman and all-around blabbermouth who is never short of advice, conversation, bad jokes, or company.

Crazy credits After all the end credits, we get to see advertising exec William Windom in the office as in the scene in the beginning of the movie, still examining the pictures Neal Page were waiting for him to get through with at that point.

User reviews Review. Top review. How To Drive Someone Crazy. Steve Martin and John Candy do a wonderful job playing off each other in this memorable comedy. Of friends of mine I know who have seen this movie, they all vividly remember this movie and their favorite scenes. Martin and Candy are stuck without plane rides home and wind up trying all modes of transportation to reach their destination. Both run into unbelievable obstacles, most of them the fault of Candy, who drives Martin almost insane.

Candy was the funnier of the two in this story but both comedians were at the top of their game here. Too bad there was so much profanity for a film that could have been enjoyed by everyone but some it is almost appropriate, especially with Martin's character. Candy's role would have made anyone swear. Martin's profane tirade with the rental car woman at the airport is hilarious. In addition to the wacky story, I enjoyed the soundtrack. Critics didn't like it, but I found the sudden bursts of rock 'n roll interesting and it added to the enjoyment of watching this almost-modern day classic.
